Counseling and Psychological Services

The Counseling and Psychological Services Center (or Counseling Center) supports the mission of Appalachian State University and the Division of Student Affairs in the academic, vocational, emotional, social and cultural development of students. The goal of the Counseling Center is to assist the University community in maximizing the personal growth and development of its members. The Counseling Center offers phone consultations to students, families, faculty, and staff regarding how to help a student they are concerned about. The Counseling Center also offers confidential and no-cost services to students who are currently enrolled in courses at ASU. The scope of services includes the following for students currently enrolled in classes:

  • Short-term individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Short-term couples/family counseling
  • Workshops, educational programming, and prevention programs
  • Emergency services when classes are in session
  • Initial Consultation assessments that include recommendations and referrals
  • Referral coordination and referral resources
  • Self-help materials

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some services are being offered remotely through telemental health. Students interested in services may call the Counseling Center to schedule an Initial Consultation with one of our counselors.
